Rural Ohio College Prep is a nonprofit organization that aims to provide free, peer-based ACT tutoring to rural high schools in Ohio
Rural Ohio College Prep offers student-to-student ACT tutoring to rural high schools in order to help prepare Ohio's rural students for their higher education journey.
Donations are primarily used to purchase tutoring materials, such as ACT guides, or to reimburse Tutors' travel costs. While tutors are paid, the are only reimbursed for fuel spent while traveling. Because we aim to serve a wide range of primarily rural high schools, some tutors may have to travel up to an hour away.
We were founded on the ideas of improving access to ACT tutoring to students in rural communities, who may not have the money or access to transportation needed to receive ACT tutoring. Numerous studies have shown that the ACT and other similar assessments are biased in favor of those with access to tutoring, so we aim to bridge the gap between wealthier, urban students, and underprivileged, rural students.
Most tutoring sessions provided are held on-campus after school, with student tutors working with students individually or in small groups. Tutoring session's are designed to meet the student's individual need and are therefore flexible, with session ranging from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Students are free to work at their own pace on whatever questions they desire, ranging from practicing test questions to time management skills and test-taking strategies, all in a casual, low pressure environment with a peer tutor.
All tutors are high school students that have taken the ACT at least once and earned a composite score of 30 or above. In addition, all tutors have received a letter of recommendation from at least one teacher or staff member at their high school.
